FINAL CALL - Applications invited for British East Asian Choreographers Development Scheme
Step Out Arts is inviting proposals from budding British East Asian choreographers to take part in a research and development opportunity which will culminate with two showcases to be held at University of Bedfordshire and Greenwich Dance Agency in September/October 2009. The showcases provide an opportunity for the choreographers to present their work to national promoters. We are looking to select a range of promising choreographers who work in a range of mediums including: contemporary dance, contemporary/ballet, Chinese contemporary, street dance, hip hop dance, multi-media dance projects and video dance. In addition to the showcases, those selected will receive up to £1000 towards the research and development costs of their proposals inclusive and a limited budget will be made available to cover travel costs towards the showcases. Participants will be provided with two weeks of free rehearsal space and will be mentored by a professional choreographer.

British East Asian Choreographers Development Scheme | Step Out Arts
Step Out Arts (SOA) was formed in 1995. It aims to promote Chinese culture and arts at its highest level to a broad audience through productions and educational projects. In 2007/08 SOA was awarded funding from Arts Council England (ACE) for the delivery of it’s annual Jie–Qing festival and in 2009 SOA was awarded funding from ACE to set up a scheme to support and develop the careers of British East Asian choreographers -- a sector which is under-represented throughout the UK.
Step Out Arts and funded by Arts Council England in partnership with Greenwich Dance Agency, University of Bedfordshire and Chinese Arts Centre. The scheme supports Arts Council England's work by taking positive action to address under-representation of Black and Asian artists in accordance with Sections 35 and 37 of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.

GOOGLE PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE Google and the Saatchi Gallery team up for new photography competition. Dear Member Google has announced an open call for submissions to the Google Photography Prize, a collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery to find talented student photographers and give them unprecedented online and offline exposure. The winning submissions will be available for millions of Google users around the world to display on their personalised iGoogle homepages, and given a special exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. The overall winner will also receive £5,000 and an invitation to spend a day with renowned photographer Martin Parr. The competition is open to students in institutions of higher education in many countries around the world. Students can enter by submitting a series of five photographs at http://www.google.com/photographyprize by May 31. The thirty-six top entries will be selected for the shortlist and made open to an online public vote on June 11. The top six vote-winners will be flown to London for the opening night of an exhibition of their work at the Saatchi Gallery, and the ultimate winner will be decided by a panel of art critics and artists, including Idris Khan, Martin Parr, Michael Hoppen, Susanna Brown, Tim Marlow and Mariella Frostrup.

Recognized curators from any nationality are invited to submit one or more proposals for solo exhibitions with artists currently working in the Middle East, North Africa or South Asia.

Three submissions will be selected for the Abraaj Capital Art Prize and each of these will receive $200,000 to cover production costs, installation costs, catalogue, shipping and travel for both curator and artist. Included in the budget will be a fixed fee of $15,000 for the curator.

Videotage is a non-profit interdisciplinary artist collective with a focus on the development of video and new media art in Hong Kong. One of Asia’s first media art organizations, Videotage was founded in 1986 and is funded by the government to cultivate interest and nurture artists in this swiftly evolving field of art.

Videotage is now accepting applications for 2009-2011 residencies. We would like to invite all local and international artists/curators/researchers/engineer/bloggers/environmentalist/activists interested in the field of media art to submit proposals for a creative and edgy project to be completed between 2009-2011 The residency is a one- to six-month period in which residents focus in, but not limited to, the following areas:

1. Research projects
2. Ongoing curatorial programming
3. Video art archive development
4. Fundraising development / Non-profit management

With the opportunity to join our broad network of artists, curators, academics and researchers working in the field of media art and to use our resources, residents are expected to develop a project to be completed, not necessarily within the period of residency, and lead to possible outcomes such as seminar, public discussion, performance and exhibition. Residents are also encouraged to participate in public events including workshops, demonstrations of research-in-progress and online releases.

What we can provide:
- Media resources (video art archive, library)
- Network (artists, curators, academics, art institutions, universities, galleries, festivals etc.)
- Production resources (equipment i.e. projectors, cameras, TVs, computers etc.)
- Venue/space for exhibition and art making
- A stipend of up to HK$20,000 to support project execution
(depending on the scale of the project, amount will be confirmed upon acceptance of proposals)

International residents are responsible for their travel costs, accommodation, living and moving expenses. Videotage staff will assist as much as possible with visa arrangements and locating cheaper accommodation in Hong Kong.

Residents can have a work desk in our office and make use of our gallery space, of which you can find the floor plan here. Residents have access to the space during office hours and other times upon request. Videotage will provide project-specific technical assistance to residents where possible though residents are expected to possess the skills necessary to execute their projects.

The International Conference on the Arts in Society and the International Journal of the Arts in Society provide an intellectual platform for the arts and art practices, and enable an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society. They are intended as a place for critical engagement, examination and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world - in studios and classrooms, in galleries and museums, on stage, on the streets and in communities.

The 2009 Arts Conference will coincide with the Venice Biennale, and will be held in conjunction with featured exhibitions and programs. The occasion of the Venice Biennale provides an opportunity for the Conference to serve as a node in the larger phenomenon of fairs, festivals, and their networks. As such, the Arts Conference aims to discover what values, instincts and common ground may exist within the arts and their practices and sites of reception around the world. Your participation shapes the Conference itself.

The theme of this year's Conference is Art and Transnationalism. It focuses dialogue on the arts and art practices that may be situated within the context of international art expositions, festivals and biennials which are engaged with the transnational production of art and its global distribution networks. The scope is deliberately broad and ambitious. Our times demand nothing less than interdisciplinary and holistic approaches. The breadth of the Conference and the Journal, however, are without prejudice to finely grained discussion of specific, local and grounded practices.

In addition to a roster of international main speakers, the Arts Conference will also include numerous individual paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by artists/practitioners, teachers and researchers. We invite you to respond to the Conference Call for Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of the Arts in Society. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registration options are also available which allow you to submit a paper for possible publication in the Journal.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 14 November 2008. Future deadlines will be announced on the Conference website after this date. Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. The International Guerrilla Video Festival Dublin 2009 will be held 19-20 February in 3 unique areas of the city: Parnell Street, Rathmines and Talbot Street. Navigating the areas over the course of two days, the IGVFest will project works relating to the social conditions of the site on building facades, monuments and temporary structures. Artists who are active in the areas and artists elsewhere addressing similar situations are invited to apply with single channel videos. Artists can work directly on site where the festival will be shown or in areas of other cities with with similar conditions. Themes to be addressed on the sites include: Parnell Street (immigration, demographic shifts, cultural hybrids); Rathmines (urban planning, gentrification, periphery); Talbot Street (maintaining of traditional culture, potemkin village).

The International Guerrilla Video Festival (IGVFest) is a mobile festival integrating video art with the urban and social environment. Removing the technologically complex medium of video out of the institutional situation, it is re-positioned as a approachable medium in the public domain. The works included engage and reflect the unique architectural, historical, and interpersonal context of each site in the festival.

The ubiquitous billboards and advertising with the same campaigns attempt to transform the urban setting into a homogeneous landscape in every city around the globe. The festival aims to re-occupy that space infusing it with a reflexive locality showing work created in concert with the community and focusing on issues related to the site. A self-contained, transportable GPU (Guerrilla Projector Unit) facilitates the incursions into the public realm, projecting the videos onto the facades of buildings, monuments, and temporary structures. Transforming public space into a fertile ground for experimentation toward new possibilities in the relationship between art and society.

謹此，我們歡迎來自亞洲的藝術家、文化工作者、藝術活動家以及各個藝術團體前來申請2009年度ANA補助金計畫。

ANA乃由一群獨立作業的藝術家、文化工作者和藝術活動家攜手設立的補助金機構，旨在扶持不同的藝術學科，其中包括視覺藝術、電影/視頻/新媒體、表演藝術、文學、批判話語分析以及藝術管理。它以11種語言進行活動運作。

ANA的支援對象包括了常駐亞洲的亞裔藝術家的項目；在亞洲發起和推行，並涉及亞洲藝術家和藝術界的專案；以及專注於東南亞的項目。與此同時，在亞洲內宣導相異文化和社區之間的積極交流與合作的專案也將列入ANA的考慮範圍之內。我們對於亞洲的現代藝術體驗以及其相對的傳統藝術之間的關係甚感興趣，順手拈來計有都市表現藝術、現代藝術、現代藝術和傳統藝術之間的關係以及新舊藝術相匯而擦出的火花。ANA打算在同一國度或城市內，推廣各種相異文化之間的合作與交流，並且考察本土—區域—環球之間藝術互補的潛質。

申請ANA補助金者須符合以下條件：（1）能夠獨立作業且強調進行程式的藝術專案；（2）長期發展、可持續的項目；（3）項目本身的藝術價值以及對藝術界的正面影響；（4）項目的展示性，如實際活動、網頁等；（5）獲得其他資金補助；以及（6）項目從2009年3月起執行。

ANA針對每一項專案的補助金款額介於美金1500–7500，無論是現有或全新的專案皆可提出申請。對於之前完成的項目，ANA也可以資助相關的跟進計畫。

提呈申請書的重要步驟︰
申請者必須以PDF格式，呈交一頁A4提議書和附上2,200字的簡介，並在2008 10月15日至11月15日之間，通過ANA網址（http://www.artsnetworkasia.org/）提交相關檔檔案。檔可以英文或其他語文（印尼文、日文、高棉文、韓文、寮文、中文、僧伽羅文、淡米爾文、泰文和越南文）書寫。單頁A4提議書則必須涵蓋專案本身的內容、哲理和概念。每位申請者僅可以呈交一份申請書。

如果您在網上進行申請之際面對問題，或者，由於所在城市的特殊原因而無法上網申請，請聯絡airmanuporn@artsnetworkasia.org或傳真至 +65-6737-7013。

British Council's 60th Anniversary Scholarships

The British Council's 60th Anniversary Scholarships celebrate the council's 60 years in Hong Kong by giving Hong Kong students the chance to experience a UK education .We are delighted to share our achievements by giving something back to the Hong Kong community through these awards generously donated by the institutions.

The nearly 50 scholarships to be awarded involve the waiving of tuition fees for one year of study in a school, college or university, for the 2009-2010 academic year. They may be for study towards a UK qualification either in the UK or Hong Kong.

If you are a permanent resident of Hong Kong you could be eligible for a 60th Anniversary Scholarship, whether you are interested in school, further education or a bachelor or master's degree.

The scheme is managed by the British Council. Selection will be carried out by the individual schools, colleges or universities you apply to. Once you have submitted your scholarship application, these institutions may require further information as part of their selection process.
